How It Works

The propagation delay of a trace depends on its effective dielectric constant. For microstrip structures, the effective value is roughly (εr+1)/2. For striplines, it equals εr.

The velocity is then c/√εeff where c is the speed of light. Skew is computed from the delay difference between the two trace lengths.
